China to be top wine consumer in the world by 2015-2020

30/01/2014 The great Asian country is already the number one consumer of red wine with 155 million cases in 2013

Many have predicted that China will be the absolute top wine consumer in the world come 2015-2020. But the great Asian country apparently seems to have already achieved top place, at least for red wine being that it is indeed the top country (including Hong Kong) for the volume of red wine consumption according to a study by Vinexpo and International Wine and Spirit Research with 155 million 9-litre cases or 1.865 billion bottles (+136% over 2008).

The Red Dragon has surpassed France with its 150 million cases of red wine per year (-18% since 2007) and Italy in third place with 141 million cases (-5.8%).

In addition, over 80% of the wine consumed in the land of the Great Wall is produced within the country, with China placing as the fifth biggest producer in the world. Although the consumption of foreign wine has increased sevenfold between 2007 and 2013, it only counts for slightly less than 20%.
