Italian Wine Sales Drop 6.5% in 2013

06/03/2014 Consumers confirm light wines in Italy

Italian wine sales have taken a drop, but the 10% price list increase “has saved” producers. In 2013 large-scale retail sales dropped by 6.5% even though the volume increased by over 3%. The year before, revenue had dropped by almost 4%. In the large-scale retail trade, over 60% of purchases are marketed. The same trend on international markets: in 2013 exports should exceed 5 billion due to the increase in prices with respect to lower volumes.

Meanwhile in Italy, people are drinking less but, on average, better. Consumers are opting for light and easy to drink wines.

On the agenda today is the press conference for Vinitaly which will be filled with exhibitors in all of its booked 100,000 sq. m. There are many new things on tap, mostly for foreign exhibitors. But first comes ProWein (March 23-25) in Dusseldorf.
