1965-2015 The Avallone Family Celebrates 50 Years of Villa Matilde, Movimento Turismo del Vino Campania Member! #50annidifalerno

22/01/2015 Fifty Harvests that made Villa Matilde a competitive modern winemaking institution and leader in the production of Falerno

It was 1965 when the first bunches of grapes of what was once called Ager Falernus were harvested in the vineyards of what would become Villa Matilda wine (www.villamatilde.it). And it is not just an ordinary wine, it is Falerno del Massico. Those grapes were the result of years of intense study and research carried out by Francesco Paolo Avallone with the goal of bringing back the ancient Falerno to life; the wine which was at one time drunk by Ovid and Martial and of which all traces of were lost.

That first harvest by Francesco Paolo Avallone marked the birth of the modern Falerno and the Villa Matilde winery in Cellole (Caserta) crowning Avallone’s dream and studies.
Since then, half a century has passed, fifty harvests, which have made Villa Matilde a competitive modern winemaking enterprise and leader in the production of Falerno. Fronted by brother and sister Salvatore and Maria Ida Avallone, Francesco Paolo’s children, the winery celebrates fifty years of history and its significant milestone with a series of initiatives including a special label, a book about Falerno and a national road show which will end with a big celebration at the winery for the 2015 harvest.

Today, the second and third generations of the Avallone Family work at Villa Matilde. The winery is present in the main national and international markets, is known to critics and wine lovers, and is even able to produce top wines sustainably with regard for the environment. Over the years, Villa Matilde has extended its exclusive production of White and Red Falerno wines to vineyards in the most suitable areas of the region: from the province of Caserta to the DOCG of Irpinia to Sannio. The production has also extended to two meditation wines and spumante. The official calendar with all the events and winery news will soon be available on the winery website and social network pages.
