A grand total of 32 wine-shops will have window displays and guided wine-tasting sessions dedicated to Puglia – a region to discover and to savour during 'Puglia top wine destination', in Rome and Milan starting on 7th October. Following the huge success of the previous editions, Puglia returns to Rome and Milan for a whole month, with a rich programme of events designed to promote the region's excellent wines and foods.

This event has been made possible by funding from Regione Puglia's Agro-Food Resources Office and is organised by the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia.

'Puglia is one of the world's top ten wine destinations, but this was never a foregone conclusion – says Fabrizio Nardoni, Regione Puglia's Agro-Food Resources Officer. 'It is the result of all the hard work, research, innovation and commitment of the people working in the industry. They have brought Puglia this important accolade and now we have to work to maintain this achievement with policies able to conserve and develop the growth of the last few years; in the period 2009-2012 (Note: Unicredit report May 2013) the Puglian wine-growing industry increased turnover from 78 to 121 million euros, selling wines (especially native 'reds' like Primitivo, Negroamaro and Nero di Troia) in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Denmark. But we can't be complacent – explains Nardoni – because Puglian wine has wide margins for improvement on the US market, its most important market. I am sure that Puglia's designation as a top wine destination by international magazine Wine Enthusiast, and the Movimento Turismo del Vino's important commercial and cultural marketing campaign will give a great contribution in this sense'.

The event will take place at the same time in Rome and Milan: in 16 Rome wine-shops belonging to 'Athenæum' and 16 Milan wine-shops belonging to 'Vinarius'. Each shop will host an exhibition of Puglian wines and customers will be able to try wines and extra virgin olive oils selected by the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia.

'Following the huge success we had last February - says Sebastiano de Corato, President of the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia - the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia is again working with wine retailers' associations 'Atheneum' (Rome) and 'Vinarius' (Milan). The Puglia Top Wine Destination project gives us the entire month of October to promote and valorise our wines and also the genuineness, excellence, quality and history that these products represent for our region. These are details which will not to escape the notice of the public in these two major Italian cities, and we hope that wine-lovers will be encouraged to come and visit Puglia'.

The wine-shops will be organising strictly made in Puglia happy hours to capture the attention of their wine-loving customers.

In addition, in 8 of the wine-shops (4 in Rome and 4 in Milan), the variety and the special features of Puglia's wines will be illustrated by expert wine and food journalists, who will lead wine-tasting open to the public (free, reservation required): in Milan Alberto Schieppati (10th October - Enoclub) will lead wine-tasting dedicated to Fiano and Fabiano Guatteri (17th October – Enoteca Cotti) to Primitivo; Guido Montaldo (24th October – Bottega dell'arte e del vino) will talk about Negroamaro and Alessandro Franceschini (30th October – Enoteca El Vinatt Renè ) about Nero di Troia. In Rome, there will be Fabio Turchetti (11th October – Enoteca 'Il vino del '99') for Negroamaro, Antonio Paolini (17th October – Enoteca Giansanti) for Nero di Troia, Alessandro Scorsone (26th October – Enoteca Di Biagio) for Primitivo and Fabrizio Russo (31st October – Trimani Wine Bar) for Fiano.

This event will appeal to wine-lovers and invite them to choose Puglia as their ideal destination for an unforgettable holiday. 'Puglia top wine destination' will combine taste, culture and new trends, capitalising on Wine Enthusiast's prestigious recognition of Puglia as one of the world's top ten wine destinations, in the awareness of the huge commercial potential of the region's wine and food products.
