'Cantine Aperte a San Martino' is back all over Italy - the Movimento Turismo del Vino's autumn event inviting experts, enthusiasts and the interested public to visit the wineries and discover this year's new wines.

The event is made possible through partnership with Regione Puglia's Agro-Food Resources Office, and takes place over an entire day - from morning to sunset. This is an unmissable chance to taste the new wine as well as some very well-known labels, to meet the producers and to share an enjoyable experience with friends and family.

In Puglia this is the sixth consecutive year of Cantine Aperte a San Martino, and eight wineries belonging to the Consortium will open up free of charge, offering a rich programme of guided tours, wine tasting and special events. In Daunia, the Alberto Longo winery at Lucera (Fg) will take part, and in the Castel del Monte area La Cantina di Andria at Andria and Villa Schinosa at Trani will be open to visitors. In the province of Bari, Terre di San Vito at Polignano a Mare will be open for the day, and in Magna Grecia visitors will be welcomed to Tenute Emèra at Lizzano. In the Salento, wine-lovers will be able to visit Hiso Telaray Libera Puglia at Mesagne (Br), Moros at Guagnano (Le) and Marulli at Copertino (Le).

As usual, the wineries taking part will also be organising special events, like art shows, music and folk dancing, as well as offering typical local food products for their visitors to try.

Cyclists will be able to enjoy the trails - combining wine and nature - organised by amateur cycling clubs Cicloamici and Ruotalibera.

The Feast of San Martino is a central moment in country life all over Puglia. Particularly in the Salento, it was traditional to celebrate the successful harvest, meaning that winter would not be a hungry time, and also to express the hope of an increasingly prosperous future. To celebrate what was considered the last day of the farming calendar, the small farmers would open up their 'ozze' (earthenware wine-jars) or barrels so that they could try their new wine, a symbol of wealth and well-being.

After Cantine Aperte a San Martino, the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia will continue its calendar of events with 'Cantine Aperte a Natale' on 7th December, at the same time as 'LoVolio Extravergine' celebrating Puglia's extra virgin olive oil, its 'green gold'.
